Security? You’re doing it wrong facebook

22 Dec 2009 by Chris Allen, View Comments

When trying to use facebook, I tend to find it annoying if for some reason things don’t work the way that I’d like it to. For example, the disaster that is Facebook chat.

However, the last thing that I expect to happen when browsing, sorry, stalking people is to be suddenly signed out of the site.

Admittedly, not the strangest thing that’s ever happened.

However I wasn’t expecting to log back in to be greeted with a security message INSISTING that I change my password with the incredibly vague warning: “there was an attack on a website unrelated to facebook … we recommend you change your password”.

What aren’t facebook telling us? Essentially all you’re saying is:
A) a website that isn’t ours got hacked into
B) for some reason or another, we think that you should now change your facebook password as a result…
C) you have no choice in this, and finally,
D) we won’t tell you the name of the other website, so you’ll never know whether someone has compromised your account on said website.

Thanks facebook, very useful.

Oh, and on a final note – when I tried to replace my “new” password with my “old” password, facebook blocked my attempt.

Please facebook, I’m old enough to look after myself these days.
